Gentildonna has won the 2012 Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse yesterday November 25, 2012.
The galloper became the first three-year-old filly to even win the Japan Cup when she beat second place-getter Orfevre to the post by a nose in the race.
However, Gentildonna had to wait to be confirmed as the winner, with Orfevre’s jockey protesting against the final result on the grounds that the winner shifted out down the final straight.
Gentildonna’s jockey, Yasunari Iwata, admitted that his horse had contacted Orfevre.
“I should have done a better job of escorting her through the race,” Iwata said.
“We bumped into Orfevre a little bit and I can’t deny it’s left a bitter taste in my mouth.
“For that I am sorry, but please credit the horse because it’s no easy feat for a 3-year-old filly to beat an incredible racehorse like Orfevre.”
Trainer Sei Ishizaka is now expected to take Gentildonna on towards the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe next season
“It’s every Japanese horseman’s dream,” Ishizaka said.
“The Arc is definitely one of our options.
“I’ve had the opportunity to train a lot of good horses in my career, but it didn’t take long for me to learn she was in a separate class.
“I was convinced she could handle the competition at the Japan Cup, and she proved it today.”
