2013 Japan Cup Final Field Features 17 Runners

November 22nd, 2013

The Group 1 Japan Cup is due to run at Tokyo Racecourse this Sunday November 24, 2013.

A total of 17 horses have accepted for a run in the 2013 Japan Cup, including Simenon.

Simenon’s last start was in Australia when he ran an impressive fourth in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 5, 2013.

The six-year-old will have to face off against the likes of Gentildonna, who has been named as the horse to beat in the 2013 Japan Cup.

Gentildonna won last year’s edition of the Japan Cup and will be out to be the first horse to ever win the race on two occasions.

Edward Dunlop’s assistant, Andrew Stringer, will line up Joshua Tree in the 2013 Japan Cup and openly admits that Gentildonna is his main danger.

“Obviously Ryan Moore is one of the finest jockeys in the world riding one of the best Japanese horses so he’s got to be a big danger to everyone in the field,” said Stringer.

“There are three Japanese horses – Gentildonna, Gold Ship and Eishin Flash – all of whom have form 10lb superior to Joshua Tree so we need one of those to run poorly to get into the serious prize-money.”

However, Stringer believes that Joshua Tree will be at his peak form when he runs in the 2013 Japan Cup.

“At this stage he’d be 110 per cent – he couldn’t be any better,” he said.

“The track here should be right up his street as he loves to gallop and this stiff mile and a half should bring out all of his fighting qualities.

“I think he’s the real deal at the moment. He looks fantastic; he’s at the top of his game.”
